The San Diego Refugee Forum is a professional association of organizations and advocates serving all populations fleeing persecution and seeking refuge in San Diego. The Refugee Forum meets monthly to exchange information and advocate on issues of concern to the community of people displaced by war and violent conflict who are now in San Diego.
Membership includes VOLAGs, MAAs, Employment Services, Government Agencies, community-based groups, refugees, advocates, and supporting individuals. The San Diego Refugee Forum meets the third Tuesday of each month, hosts guest speakers and facilitates discussion on topics of interest. The Forum also provides government agencies with an opportunity for gathering information and input on policy issues concerning the refugee community. Active members become voting members upon remitting annual dues.

Silverman has received numerous awards and honors including being named CNN Hero of the
Week and the City of San Diego honored him by selecting February 19 as “Scott Silverman
Day” for his contributions to the community.
For over two decades he was the Executive Director and Founder of Second Chance, a human
services agency that is committed to breaking the cycle of unemployment, poverty, and
homelessness by offering job readiness training, employment placement assistance, mental
health counseling, case management, and affordable housing referrals to people who desire to
change their lives. Over the past 15 years Scott has assisted more than 24,000 people in San
Diego gain employment.
Silverman is an active member of the community as a proud Rotarian of Club #33; a Paul Harris
Fellow; Eureka Fellow; member, Eureka Communities National Board of Trustees; and a past
Board member of the San Diego Community Housing Corporation.
Through the years, he has received numerous awards recognizing his leadership and
dedication to the improvement of his community including the Henrietta Rubenstein Community
Award, Eureka’s Outstanding Fellow Award, the Downtown San Diego Partnership’s Frank
Curran Humanitarian Award, the San Diego Press Club Headliner Award, the San Diego County
Board of Supervisors Citizen of the Week Award and It Takes A Community Award Honoree. In
2003, Silverman was selected as one of the Top 50 People to Watch by San Diego Magazine.
In October 2005, he was given the Channel 10 Leadership Award for the second time. In
February 2007, Silverman was appointed to the City of San Diego Commission on Gang
Prevention and Intervention. In April 2007, he was voted as one of four “Who Are Your Heroes?”
sponsored by KNSD NBC San Diego. In 2008, he became a member of the Honorary Deputy
Sheriff Association. In March 2010, he joined the United Way Home Again Board of Directors as
well as the Gang Task Force, which is part of the Institute for Public Strategies.
Silverman has extensive knowledge and experience with the relationship between
unemployment, poverty, homelessness, substance abuse, and incarceration. Silverman is a
frequent speaker to political, business and community groups on the need for prisoner reform to
prevent homelessness, enhance public safety and reduce costs for California’s taxpayers by
helping former inmates to avoid recidivism and re-incarceration.

We are hosting the Third Annual International Night of Networking on Wednesday, April 24, 2013, 5:30-7:30 PM at ResCare. (3910 University Ave. 3rd Floor, San Diego CA 92105). This will be an opportunity for employers and industry representatives to informally mingle with qualified job-seekers in the fields of Information Technology, Engineering, Biotechnology, and the growing Green Industry, who have come to the US as refugees or asylees fleeing war and persecution. It is not a job fair, but rather aims to help these professionals familiarize themselves with American-style networking and to provide some general information on prospects for re-entering their fields of expertise.
